Climatl.ly is an innovative e-learning platform designed to educate employees in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) on sustainable living models. The platform incorporates a unique blend of business communication, gamification, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance the learning experience and promote sustainable habits.

The purpose of this project is to redesign the Climat.ly image to make it more consistent and engaging. Thanks to the close collaboration of three teams: the Business, Gamification, and IoT teams, this has been made possible!

Boost the Climat.ly Imagine

Brand Awareness

The crucial first step to make Climat.ly stand out was to characterize it while respecting its foundations, ensuring it continued to reflect its essence while managing to stand out from the crowd.

The Climat.ly website conveys a clear message about environmental issues through a distinctive style, carefully chosen colors, images, and a tone of voice that fully reflects its image.
Let's start by analyzing the competitive landscape and respective communication strategies. We selected the most relevant competitors, evaluated their offerings, and highlighted key points.

No platform can boast an approach like Learn & Act!

Unlike Climat.ly, many companies have focused efforts on creating social channels to improve positioning and drive traffic to their site. The response? Enhance the marketing strategy by creating a flexible and distinctive brand, centered around usability, differentiation, and a new approach.
The goal is to develop a solid foundation for the new brand. Through a process of analysis, case studies, research, and weeks of ideation, the creation of a concept that embodies Climat.ly's multiple objectives in a minimal and modern graphic context is arrived. A unifying concept is growth, a key point in the development of the concept.
Another fundamental element is metamorphosis, change. These concepts, derived from an in-depth process of analysis and ideation, have shaped a new brand that synthesizes the traits and values of Climat.ly.

Strategies

Marketing

The website can serve as the central hub to redirect traffic and capture the attention of B2B relationships. Simultaneously, it can become an aggregator of articles, news, and best practices by incorporating an archive or blog function.

These resources can be shared as newsletters or company posts on LinkedIn. The platform's content should be regularly updated, considering a potential outreach to the educational sector. Keep in mind the creation of teasers and short videos for your social media.

It will be crucial to enhance the brand awareness, showcasing to both the general audience and business sector expertise in addressing these issues and navigating organizational change. Redefining the target audience by differentiating the services offered and leveraging various communication channels is key.

Target Audience:

  • SMEs

  • Micro-enterprises

  • Professionals

  • School Staff

  • Students

Furthermore, it's essential to maintain a presence on social media with varied formats tailored to each platform. Tailoring content to suit the specific characteristics of each social media channel is crucial for effective engagement.

Social Media:

  • Short-duration videos (1 min max)

  • Adopt a friendlier tone

  • Consider opening a TikTok channel for greater virality

  • Collaborate with partners for content creation

  • Podcasts

  • Spotify playlists (highly effective!)

Setting goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound is crucial.

MarketingTopics:

  • Form strategic partnerships for audience growth and attractiveness

  • Focus on self-branding and selling your image

  • Create a certification or accreditation

The outlined strategy revolves around transforming the Climat.ly website into a central hub for traffic channeling, with the goal of capturing the attention of the B2B sector. The platform will not only serve as an informational hub with articles, news, and best practices but also as a means of sharing through newsletters and social media.
To maximize impact, diversifying formats on social media, implementing short videos, adopting a friendly tone, and exploring new platforms like TikTok will contribute to a more dynamic digital presence. Redefining the target audience, considering SMEs, micro-enterprises, professionals, school staff, and students, along with targeted presence on various platforms, will be essential.
Furthermore, the importance of setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals underscores the results-oriented approach. This model, integrated with various marketing initiatives, strategic collaborations, and ongoing content curation, will form a solid foundation to enhance brand awareness and successfully address the challenges of change within the company and the community.

Increase User Engagement and Learning Time

Gamification

Climat.ly has an e-learning platform accessible to every employee, allowing them to attend video lectures and take tests to assess their learning. To make the platform more engaging, it needs to captivate users who are, in a way, obligated to take the courses through the principles of Gamification. The goal is to instill sustainable habits in users. However, for these habits to become ingrained, they must be introduced gradually, with a reward for each new interaction.

Each employee is a Hero, working for the good of the Earth—an archetype not representing a superhero dedicated to justice but a character initially resistant to the significant task entrusted to them. The hero, despite their initial reluctance, immerses themselves in the mission, undergoing personal transformation and influencing its outcome. Inevitably, they feel part of something greater, intimidating yet changeable and better with their contribution. This narrative reflects the essence of Climat.ly's vision, where every individual, embodying the Hero archetype, plays a vital role in the collective mission towards a sustainable and improved future.

How it works

Structure

While studying the platform, it was realized that the topics could be categorized into four blocks. This insight triggered the structure to make the e-learning platform more engaging. These four blocks are named Macro-Missions, and the user becomes the hero tasked with undertaking them. At the beginning of the training period, right after registration, each user is randomly assigned to one of the four Macro-Missions. The training journey spans 12 months. To foster a spirit of collaboration rather than rivalry, by the end of the program, each user will have tackled all four Macro-Missions. To ensure that learning is not merely passive and easily forgettable, each Macro-Mission is divided into a learning component and an action-oriented component called 'act,' where the user must perform specific tasks.

Screenshot 2024-02-26 133351.png

Learn

Within the learning component, the platform is structured into instructional blocks, totaling four, each dedicated to a specific theme. These blocks are further divided into three modules, each addressing distinct topics and comprising approximately 5 video lessons. To ensure a comprehensive understanding, users must watch each video lesson in its entirety before gaining the option to skip or revisit content. Once unlocked, users can review the lessons at their convenience and revisit critical details.

This intentional design compels users to focus their attention on the video content, anticipating the subsequent quizzes, and prevents attempts to skip through. At the conclusion of each module, a quiz with 10 questions is presented—thus, three quizzes per instructional block and a total of 12 quizzes throughout the entire training.

Each user is granted three lives to pass the quiz, requiring a minimum score of 70% (7/10) up to a maximum of 100% (10/10). In the event of failure or a desire to achieve a perfect score, users can retake the quiz. If mistakes exhaust all three lives, a waiting period is enforced before the user can attempt the quiz again.

Screenshot 2024-02-26 133945.png

After completing the viewing of each video and successfully passing each test, a segment of the badge will be colored. At the end of each instructional block, the respective segment will be entirely colored. Once the entire training is finished, the badge will be fully completed, symbolizing the certificate of participation and successful completion of the Learn phase.

Screenshot 2024-02-26 135312.png

Act

The act component is further divided into three micro-missions that progressively increase in difficulty. Each month, users are required to undertake an action. The three actions are, respectively: Gesture, Challenge, and Event.

Screenshot 2024-02-26 141459.png

Gesture, Challenge and Event for each MM

Macro Mission (MM)

The themes related to the points of the Agenda 2030 are explored through the Macro Missions (MM), each represented by a character/avatar. Each employee is randomly assigned to one of these missions, each of which suggests actions, initiatives, and onboarding events. This personalized approach not only engages employees uniquely but also provides a diversified journey through the Agenda 2030 themes. The proposed actions in each Micro Mission serve as catalysts for engagement and active participation, contributing to fostering a sustainable corporate culture aligned with the values of the Agenda 2030.

Enviromental Avatar

Whenever an action is taken on a specific theme, the employee earns points for that particular mission. For each Macro Mission, there will be multiple actions to choose from. There is a mandatory minimum number of actions, while others are at the discretion of the employee.

All actions contribute to accumulating points, and naturally, those who engage more will earn more points, redeemable later in the Shop. These actions are simple yet impactful in daily life. There will be a list of 20 suggested gestures per mission, and each user must complete at least 6 of them. These gestures turn into challenges when involving multiple participants.

Events are immersive experiences that allow employees to firsthand experience what they have learned during the training, particularly related to the chosen Macro Mission at the beginning of the program.

Events and initiatives tied to partnerships and collaboration with local entities. Each Gesture is worth 500 Globes, each Challenge is worth 1000 Globes, and each Event is worth 5000 Globes.

To certify the actual completion of the three actions, employees have three options, each associated with a different score:

  • Checkmark = 10 Globes

  • Photo = 200 Globes

  • Video = 750 Globes.

The gamification elements embedded within Climat.ly's training framework not only engage employees in meaningful actions but also foster a sense of accomplishment and collaboration. The point-based system, tied to various actions and challenges, serves as both a motivational tool and a measure of individual and collective efforts. As users progress through Macro and Micro Missions, they accumulate points that can be exchanged for rewards in the Shop.

Moreover, these gamified initiatives extend beyond the digital realm. The results and achievements from Macro and Micro Missions form the foundation for the development of a corporate IoT (Internet of Things) object. This tangible outcome transforms virtual engagement into a tangible impact, bridging the gap between digital learning and real-world sustainability efforts. Through this innovative approach, Climat.ly not only educates and motivates but also translates employee actions into tangible contributions to a more sustainable future.

IoT Implementation

Enhance User Interaction and Physical Representation of Progress

At this stage of the process, it was crucial to conceive an IoT object that not only adhered to sustainability principles but was also user-friendly, embodying the essence of Climat.ly. The goal was to create a device that reflected the platform's commitment to environmental sustainability while offering an intuitive user experience. The IoT object thus becomes a tangible symbol of Climat.ly, representing the concrete dedication of employees to the company's mission, solidifying the integration between digital training and daily actions in support of sustainability.

The first essential and indispensable step was conducting research on potential users who would use the IoT device. The research method employed involved disseminating a survey to gain a deeper understanding of users' habits, goals, and pain points.

Designing the IoT Device

Starting from the concept

The object should align with the needs of users and clients while uniquely embodying sustainability. Given the clear impact of the climate emergency that each of us can tangibly refute, it has become evident to work on the concept of time, or rather the lack of time.

climat.ly

Action is needed NOW

Divided in four pieces as the gamification's missions.

The Naming

Referring to the idea of time and the abbreviation "/ly," it felt natural to spontaneously name the IoT object "Time/ly."

TIME/LY

In addition to the name, a tagline has been created to be directly applied to the object, summarizing its concept in a phrase: "Change with TIME/LY".

How is made the Device

From Idea to Propotype

Considering the users' needs, the concept of creating an abstract clock that fosters unity and represents Climatl.ly was introduced. The idea began to take shape, and the initial draft of the device started to form.

Screenshot 2024-02-27 115612.png

The four quadrants of the circumference symbolize the four Macro Missions of gamification. To provide an alternative representation of the scoring for the four Macro Missions, it was decided to give the device two types of point counting. One gradually increases over the 12 months of training, while the other activates instantly when a user from the Macro Missions completes one of the three actions (Gesture, Challenge, or Event).

To add more dynamism, the four quadrants become mobile and will serve as a visual representation of the instant score. To achieve a softer effect, the device will use LED lights in four different colors (matching the colors of the four Macro Missions) to indicate the overall score of the training journey (12 months).

The Material Choice

The choice of materials takes sustainability into consideration.

The frame is crafted from recycled and FSC-certified wood, featuring a light tone and the presence of natural 'imperfections' that enhance the natural and simple design of the frame. The base carries the message: 'Change with TIME/LY.

Screenshot 2024-02-27 131602.png

It conceals the elements (fans and LED lights) that, as the missions progress, animate and add color to the picture. Additionally, it also houses the motor devices (servomotors) and the electrical system (wires and power cables).

Screenshot 2024-02-27 131711_edited.png

The four quadrants of the circumference  transform into fans attached to servo motors for opening and closing.

Screenshot 2024-02-27 132801.png

The chosen material for the creation of the fans is paper. Thanks to its characteristics and cost-effectiveness, it is a lightweight, inexpensive, and recycled material.
The lights are LED lights positioned inside the frame.

How works the Device

Propotyping with Arduino

Time/Ly is connected to a device via Wi-Fi to the platform where the user logs in to begin the journey. Time/Ly records the score of each of the four Macro Missions, causing the fans to move accordingly. Simultaneously, the light corresponding to the Macro Mission begins to illuminate, tracking activities. This synchronized interaction provides a dynamic representation of the user's progress and engagement with the training program.

The fans visually represent the four Macro Missions found on the platform. The sound effect produced by moving the fans upon completing a mission is a gentle rustling, creating a notification effect that is light and natural, akin to a breath. The lights display the mission history, intensifying gradually as users progress with their actions. Collaboration is the centerpiece; only through teamwork can the artwork be completed.

For the prototype, instead of connecting Time/Ly to the platform via Wi-Fi, Arduino has been used.

Screenshot 2024-02-27 141128.png

Once the Arduino board was loaded with programs for the servo motors of the fans and the LED lights, the prototype came to life.

Time/Ly is designed for both individual users and corporate clients. Its goal is to be a low-maintenance design object that draws attention through the movement of the fans without being intrusive. Time/Ly comes to life only when there is collaboration at its core. Because engaging in sustainability and being sustainable is pure collaboration, and to improve the world of tomorrow, we all must commit ourselves.

  1. The phone rings.

  2. The user sees the notification from the Climat.ly app.

  3. The user takes action.

  4. Due to the action, the fans move.

  5. The user feels satisfied and wants to perform more actions.

  6. Other users receive notifications.

  7. They also take actions.

  8. The fans move, and the lights increase in intensity.

  9. Users feel part of a group and actively contribute to the change.

Time/ly becomes the object that represents Climat/ly. An item that is alive and, when seen, is immediately associated with Climat/ly.

Screenshot 2024-02-27 144214.png

Time/ly is designed to be placed at the entrance of the office or in a break area so that all users can see it without being distracted. With Climat.ly, all users no longer have distinct job roles but share the same mission. This approach aims to put both executives and interns on an equal footing.

Furthermore, after 12 months of training, Time/ly, following a refurbishment and replacement of damaged parts, will move to another company to embark on a new educational journey, avoiding unnecessary consumption and continuing to live on!

Conclusion

The Collaboration Between Team.

Collaborating on this project has been incredibly exciting, and the synergy among the Business, Gamification, and IoT teams was crucial in developing a product that is inherently sustainable. Throughout this project, respecting and assisting colleagues proved to be essential. When multiple people contribute to a project, ideas become incredibly rich and detailed. The risk of becoming attached to ideas is always present, and succumbing to biases is easy. However, with perseverance and collaboration, ideas start to take shape, and doubts begin to fade. Working on this project has not only enriched my cultural and professional experience but has also contributed to personal growth!
